No Child Grieves Alone
Our mission began with a child who lost her mother and a promise that no kid would have to grieve alone. That promise grew into a movement, and that movement found its way to Northwest Florida.

How it Started
Valerie’s House opened in 2016 after founder Angela Melvin, who lost her mother Valerie in a car accident when she was 10, returned to Fort Myers and recognized there were almost no peer support resources for grieving children. With help from volunteers, nonprofit partners, and community leaders, she created a peer-based support program modeled in part on the Dougy Center, providing ongoing groups and activities where children and families can connect and heal after loss.

Bringing it Home
After losing her mother to cancer in sixth grade, Crista Brandt understood how isolating childhood grief can be.
In April 2021, she collaborated with Angela and brought Valerie’s House to Northwest Florida, launching the first group with 15 children and 10 caregivers.
Since then, more than 1000 children and family members have found connection and support in the Pensacola area.

Where we are today
In January 2026, - Valerie’s House Northwest Florida, Inc officially transitioned from a chapter to an independent 501(c)(3). As Valerie’s House NWFL, the organization is locally led and governed, with decision-making driven by those who best understand Northwest Florida. This allows programming, partnerships, and future expansion to align with the region’s unique needs and strengthens our ability to support the more than 13,000 children expected to lose a parent or sibling before age 18.
